Project Summary

International Review of Curriculum-Based Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs

Description

This project summarized and reviewed studies of the impact of curriculum-based sex education and HIV education programs, followed by a more in-depth analysis of those programs found to be effective in changing behavior. Studies included those conducted anywhere in the world with special emphasis on studies in developing countries.

More specifically, the objectives of this project were to:

  1. Identify research studies on the effects of sex and HIV education programs meeting programmatic and methodological criteria
  2. To the extent possible, summarize in considerable detail these studies, their programs and their effects on mediating outcomes and actual sexual behaviors, including the impact of these programs on subgroups of young adults
  3. Identify those sex and HIV education programs that have particularly strong evidence that they actually changed young adult sexual behavior in a positive direction, analyze them much more intensively, and determine the common characteristics of these effective sex and HIV education programs that distinguish them from ineffective programs that did not change behavior
