Evidence-Based/Science-Based Programs

The value of evidence-based curricula relies on the large-scale studies (either quasi-experimental or randomized trials) that yield data showing their effectiveness over time and/or across various communities.

Led by our respected researchers, Drs. Karin Coyle and Douglas Kirby, ETR created four acclaimed evidence-based prevention curricula focusing on teen HIV, STD and unintended pregnancy prevention. We continue to embark on new studies that may yield additional evidence-based curricula.

Since 1998, we’ve offered an online resource to the field – ReCAPP (Resource Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention) to bridge the gap between the creation of evidence-based programs and current practice. ReCAPP provides practical tools and information for health educators, teachers and program planners in order to support their efforts to reduce adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviors. (ReCAPP is planning a redesign in 2008).

Reviews of School-Based Prevention Programs

ETR also contributes to the field of youth-based prevention programs by summarizing the literature regarding school-based sex education programs in the U.S. and developing nations. Our studies are widely read and routinely cited in government briefs, the media, and by research and policy organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

ETR Co-Developed & Evaluated

ETR researchers develop or co-develop sex education curricula (see below) based on established theories and effective pedagogy. ETR’s curricula are designed to improve youths’

  • knowledge and perception about the risk of pregnancy and STDs;
  • values and attitudes about abstinence and the use of protection;
  • perception of peer norms about sex and the use of protection; and
  • skills to abstain from sex or to use protection.

Recognitions

Several agencies and private organizations have produced compendia listing evidence-based programs that they find to be the most effective. These compendia have all been thoughtfully constructed by reputable colleagues in the field. The currency of these lists vary, as some were set before new programs were reviewed or the most recent studies of existing programs were considered. Additionally, some lists have since ended and are no longer operational (e.g., CDC-DASH’s “Programs that Work”).

While ETR currently does not officially endorse any of these compendia, we are proud to have them include programs that we (co-)developed, evaluated and/or trained to. These compendia include:

  1. List of Effective Programs” — compiled by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
  2. Science and Success: Sex Education and Other Programs That Work to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, HIV & Sexually Transmitted Infections” — compiled by Advocates for Youth.
  3. PASHA” (Program Archive on Sexuality, Health and Adolescence) — compiled by Sociometrics.
  4. "Compendium of HIV Prevention Interventions with Evidence of Effectiveness" — compiled by CDC DHAP (this list focuses on non-school based programs).
  5.  “Research-Validated Programs ” — compiled by California Healthy Kids Resource Center.
  6. The former “Programs that Work” — compiled by CDC DASH.
