Evidence-Based/Science-Based ProgramsThe value of evidence-based curricula relies on the large-scale studies (either quasi-experimental or randomized trials) that yield data showing their effectiveness over time and/or across various communities. Led by our respected researchers, Drs. Karin Coyle and Douglas Kirby, ETR created four acclaimed evidence-based prevention curricula focusing on teen HIV, STD and unintended pregnancy prevention. We continue to embark on new studies that may yield additional evidence-based curricula. Since 1998, we’ve offered an online resource to the field – ReCAPP (Resource Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention) to bridge the gap between the creation of evidence-based programs and current practice. ReCAPP provides practical tools and information for health educators, teachers and program planners in order to support their efforts to reduce adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviors. (ReCAPP is planning a redesign in 2008).
Reviews of School-Based Prevention ProgramsETR also contributes to the field of youth-based prevention programs by summarizing the literature regarding school-based sex education programs in the U.S. and developing nations. Our studies are widely read and routinely cited in government briefs, the media, and by research and policy organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Several agencies and private organizations have produced compendia listing evidence-based programs that they find to be the most effective. These compendia have all been thoughtfully constructed by reputable colleagues in the field. The currency of these lists vary, as some were set before new programs were reviewed or the most recent studies of existing programs were considered. Additionally, some lists have since ended and are no longer operational (e.g., CDC-DASH’s “Programs that Work”). While ETR currently does not officially endorse any of these compendia, we are proud to have them include programs that we (co-)developed, evaluated and/or trained to. These compendia include:
