Project Summary - ArchiveHealth Champions Evaluation
DescriptionIn 1999, the California Pacific Medical Center started the Health Champions project in K-8 schools in the San Francisco Unified School District. Through a comprehensive lifestyle program, Health Champions was designed to include students, their families and teachers in order to create the necessary foundation for a lifetime of health. This innovative program provides increased physical activity opportunities, nutrition services, health screenings, mental health counseling, staff wellness, and health education. The Health Champions’ evaluation included several quantitative instruments including SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time) as well as written surveys completed by students, parents, and teachers prior to program implementation, and at least once a year thereafter. Qualitative data were also collected through focus groups and interviews with students, parents, and teachers.
