Project SummaryGirl Game Company
DescriptionThis project extends the work of our Girls Creating Games project, also funded by NSF. In the current project, ETR is working with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s Extended Learning Program to implement the Girl Game Company. The aim is to increase middle school girls’ interest, ability, and motivation to pursue courses and careers in science and information technology. While it has been difficult for young women to break into the technology field, it has been even more challenging for young Latinas. The Girl Game Company seeks to address this: a minimum of 80 girls will complete the program over a three-year period; the majority will be Latina. The Girl Game Company will meet after school and during the summer, for a total of 260 program hours. Each participant will play a role in the Company, serving in one of four departments: production, design, human resources, and marketing. Activities include IT instruction to teach girls how to design and program their own original computer games and produce a multimedia ‘digital documentary’ about their games, an astrobiology curriculum, and career identity exploration that includes virtual mentors. The girls will also be involved in the online community called Whyville.net, where participants will play science games, design their own virtual clubhouse, and present their games to their peers around the world. Finally, participants will go on field trips to local colleges and technology companies, and attend parent and family involvement activities.
